Troubleshooting: Reconnect your Cloud Direct number

Steps to reconnect a WhatsApp Cloud Direct (API) number that has lost its connection to Meta, plus common reasons this can happen.

Written by Martha Franklin

If your WhatsApp channel shows a connection error, it means your number's direct Cloud API connection to Meta has been interrupted. This can happen for a few reasons if your access token or permissions expired or were revoked — for example, if the Meta account admin's Facebook password was changed, or access was reviewed/reset on Meta's side.

In most cases, this doesn't affect your existing chat history — you just need to reconnect the channel so messages can flow again.

Instructions

  1. Select the affected WhatsApp channel.

  2. Click Connect in the error message window.

  3. In the Facebook flow that follows, click Continue.

  4. Select your Business portfolio and WhatsApp Business account.

  5. Select your phone number and press Next.

  6. Finally, press Confirm.

  7. It may then take a moment, but soon your account should be connected again.
