Switching from WhatsApp API to Coexistence

How to switch your WhatsApp number from a standard API connection to WhatsApp Coexistence, including what to expect during the transition.

Written by Martha Franklin

If your WhatsApp number is currently connected to Superchat via the API, we recommend keeping it that way. Switching to WhatsApp Coexistence from an existing API connection is not an officially supported process by Meta — it requires disconnecting your number entirely, results in the loss of your chat history in Superchat, and leaves you without access to WhatsApp for a period of time. If you would still like to proceed, please read the steps below carefully.

⚠️ Note: You will be without access to WhatsApp in Superchat for roughly two weeks while your number builds up sufficient activity in the WhatsApp Business App to qualify for an API connection.

Step 1: Disconnect the number from the API

In your Meta Business Manager, disconnect your WhatsApp number from its current API connection. For step-by-step instructions on how to do this, see How to delete your WhatsApp number in the Meta Business Suite.

⚠️ Note: Once the number has been disconnected from the API, all existing chat histories and associated data will be lost in Superchat. Please make sure you have saved any information you need before proceeding.

Step 2: Use the number in the WhatsApp Business App

After disconnecting, the number must be used actively in the WhatsApp Business App before it can qualify for a Coexistence connection. Meta's eligibility is based on two factors: account tenure and messaging quality. This means the number needs to demonstrate a genuine pattern of real, two-way customer conversations — a small number of test messages is unlikely to be sufficient.

If the number is not yet eligible when you attempt to reconnect, you will see the following error message from Meta:

"Your phone number isn't eligible to connect to the WhatsApp Business Platform. More activity on the WhatsApp Business App is needed to help determine eligibility."

If you see this, continue using the number and try again after a further period of activity.

Meta does not disclose the exact threshold required to qualify. In most cases eligibility is reached within around two weeks, but it can take longer — some customers have reported waiting one to two months. The more genuine messaging activity on the number, the sooner it is likely to qualify.

Step 3: Connect via Coexistence

Once the number has reached the required activity threshold, you can reconnect it to Superchat using the Coexistence setup flow. Full instructions for the flow can be found here: How to set up WhatsApp Coexistence
