What is the webchat?

By webchat we mean the widget that appears on your website and lets visitors choose how they want to contact your business (e.g. WhatsApp, Instagram, Live Chat, phone, email, links).

Who can create, edit or install webchats?

  • admins can create, view and edit webchats

  • anyone can add the webchat to the business website

How to create or manage a webchat?

Create or edit webchats

1. Go to Settings → Webchat.

2. From here you can:

  • Create a new Webchat

  • Edit or delete existing Webchats

Setup channels & links

1. Website URL: Enter the site where the widget will be installed (for internal documentation only).

2. Add channels: Add any channel you’ve connected in your Inbox (WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, Telegram, Live Chat, etc.).

3. Add custom links (only available in Professional plan onwards):

  • Website link (e.g. “Shop now” → shop.com)

  • Email link (opens the user’s email client)

  • Phone link (opens the user’s dialer to call directly)

4. Groups: Organise channels into groups (e.g. “Berlin Office,” “Munich Office”). Groups can be renamed, reordered, and assigned icons.

Customise the Webchat Appearance

The appearance is divided into Launcher and Widget.

The Launcher is the small button (usually in the bottom corner of your website) that visitors click to open the Webchat.

The Widget is the full panel and chat window that opens when someone clicks the launcher, showing all available channels and links.

Widget settings

  • Logo (optional)

  • Introduce team (optional): shows up to 3 team members with profile pictures or initials

  • Background color: solid or gradient (provide one color, gradient is generated automatically)

  • Font color: black or white

Launcher settings

  • Welcome message: always show, desktop only, mobile only, or hidden

  • Launcher icon: 3 presets or custom (custom only available in Professional plan onwards)

  • Shape: round or square

  • Background color: solid (pick any color)

  • Icon color: black or white

  • Position: left or right

  • Distance: define px from bottom and side

  • Avatar: shown in the welcome message bubble

Advanced settings:

  • Remove “Powered by Superchat” branding (only available in Professional plan onwards)

Customise the Webchat Copy & Localisation

1. Choose which languages the Webchat should support (based on the visitor’s browser language).

2. Set a fallback language if the visitor’s language isn’t available.

3. Customise all text (headline, description, group names, CTAs etc.) for each language.

Get Installation Instructions for the Webchat

Superchat generates a simple code snippet you must add to your website’s <head> section.

You can either:

  • Install it yourself (copy & paste the code into your website)

  • Send installation instructions by email (e.g. to your IT team or someone who has access to your website's code)

For Developers and tech-savvy people

You can fully control the webchat widget's behaviour on your website. For instance, you can show or hide the widget and launcher, open and close the widget with your own buttons, pre-fill WhatsApp or Live Chat messages and many more things. For this, please use the Superchat Webchat Widget SDK: developers.superchat.com/docs/widget-sdk

FAQ

When should I use Groups in the Webchat?

Use groups to keep choices clear when you have more than one “entry point”.

Examples:

  • Multiple locations (e.g., Berlin, Munich) with different channels for each, under one website for all locations

  • Different teams / departments (e.g., Sales, Support, Recruiting)

  • Distinct products / brands under one website

You can name each group, give it an icon, and reorder groups and channels with drag & drop.

If I change Webchat settings later, do I have to reinstall the code?

No. Once the snippet is on your site, changes to the Webchat update automatically. Re-installation is only needed if you move to a new website or replace the snippet entirely.

What features are included in which plans?

All plans include Webchat. The Professional plan (and up) unlocks extras like:

  • Custom links (e.g., Shop, Email, Call with custom label & icon)

  • Custom launcher icon

  • Remove “Powered by Superchat” branding

What’s the difference between Webchat and Live Chat?

  • Webchat = the website widget.

  • Live Chat = one channel you can include inside a Webchat (alongside WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, phone, links, etc.)

Can I use Webchat without Live Chat?

Yes. You can build a Webchat with only external channels (WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, etc.) and/or links—Live Chat is optional.

Can I use Live Chat without Webchat?

No. Live Chat only works when it’s connected to a Webchat. The Webchat is the widget that makes Live Chat visible on your website.

How do languages work?

You choose supported languages and a fallback. The widget uses the visitor’s browser language.

Will Webchat slow down my site?

No our Webchat should not slow down you website. It’s designed to have minimal impact on your page and SEO performance.

What happens if I delete a Webchat?

The widget disappears from your website. Your channels and conversations remain in Superchat; only that Webchat configuration is removed.

Can I control the Webchat with code?
