Preparation

  • You need admin access in your Superchat account

Instructions

Create contact attribute

To wish our contacts a happy birthday, we first need to create an attribute to store the date.

To do this, navigate to the contact attributes settings:

Now create a new contact attribute with called Date of birth, with the data type Date. Then press Create.

Request date of birth

Collect your customers' dates of birth. There are various ways to do this:

  • You may already have the data and import it.

  • You can create an automation that automatically asks for the data.

  • Or, you can ask for the date of birth in the chat and enter it manually (explained below):

Go into the conversation with the desired contact and select the Contact button in the top right.

Then select Attributes and manually enter the birthdate.

Create birthday wishes template

Create a new WhatsApp template. To do this, go to Settings, click on Templates on the left, then on WhatsApp templates and then on New template.

Click Create your own template.

Create your birthday wish text.

Ideally, you should also include a birthday discount code to encourage your customers to shop with you. To do this, add a button, enter the button text and the website URL to which you want to link and submit the template for review.

Press Submit for review and then Submit one last time to request verification.

Creating the Automation

Last but not least, we now need to create the automation that sends a message to your contacts on their birthday.

Click on Automations and then on New automation (then select Create your own in the ensuing window).

Change the name of the automation. This will make it easier for you to find it again in the future. Then click on Add trigger.

Choose the trigger Date & time reached.

Select the contact attribute Date of birth on the right, which we created in the previous steps. Now select the time at which the birthday message should be sent and activate Repeat every year.

To set up the next step of the automation, press and hold the circle in the bottom right field, drag the mouse to the right and release.

Choose Send WhatsApp Template.

Choose the WhatsApp template we created previously.

Click on Publish in the top right (and again in the ensuing pop-up window).

The automation is now all set up!
